Card printer shows “Nockenfehler” (cam error): check the power supply and mechanics

On this page

Quick answer

If the display shows “Nockenfehler” (cam error), the printer cannot raise or lower the print head. First check the power supply: both plugs must sit firmly, and it must be the printer’s original power supply. Then check the mechanics: switch the printer off, open the lid and remove a card, dye film or foreign object blocking the print head.

Check the power supply and mechanics and learn why the error can come back after power cuts (1:38 minutes, narrated in German).

Step 1: Check the power supply

  1. Check that the power supply’s plug sits firmly in the back of the printer.
  2. Check that the mains plug sits firmly in the socket.
  3. Use only the printer’s original power supply. Other power supplies often do not deliver enough power for the printer.

Step 2: Check the mechanics

  1. Switch the printer off with the left button.
  2. Open the lid.
  3. Check whether a card, the dye film or a foreign object is blocking the print head.
  4. Take out the dye film and remove whatever is in the way.
  5. Put the dye film back and close the lid.
  6. Switch the printer on again.

The short guide to inserting the dye film and cards shows which way round the dye film goes.

If the error comes back

If the site had repeated power cuts, the power supply may be damaged. When the power returns, voltage spikes often occur. The power supply then still delivers power, but no longer enough to lift the print head.

  • Usually: a new, original power supply helps.
  • Less often: the motor or sensor in the printer is damaged. Voltage spikes can also hit the printer’s electronics.
